Did you know that Goyard is the world’s oldest trunk maker—one year older than even the popular French brand Louis Vuitton? Steeped in history, Goyard was founded by Pierre-François Martin in 1792, a time of the golden age of trunk makers, and was famous with French aristocracy. But it wasn’t until 1853 when François Goyard rebranded the house that it saw a revival, with a focus placed on the manufacturing process via opening workshops and boutiques across the world.

But if you thought that Goyard’s know-how include leather bags like other luxury brands, you might be wrong. The brand’s most notable distinction is the use of its Goyardine canvas, created in 1892. Inspired by the family history (the family’s males worked as log drivers), the Goyardine canvas is made of a natural coated cloth made of linen and cotton. It sports an uncanny resemblance to leather, and is waterproof and hard-wearing at the same time.

What’s interesting about the material is the process behind creating it. After ground-colour application, three successive layers of etching colours are then applied to create its trademark pattern that has a raised effect. The Goyardine canvas comes in a myriad of shades, from red, orange and green to burgundy, blue and grey.

Goyard prides itself in being exclusive—and we gotta give them credit for it. You can’t actually purchase any of its products online, with an exception of direct email to its headquarters. And since it is still privately-owned, you won’t find ad campaigns or even digital marketing from the brand.
