Brand Spotlight: Vegan and All-Natural F&B Label Jomeis Fine Foods

Back in 2000 when Vicki and Martin Nguyen first founded their health centre in Essendon, Australia, they discovered that there was a need to educate the community the possibilities of eating good quality, healthy whole foods without eschewing the yum factor. After all, a healthy diet didn’t always necessitate a bland or boring one. Martin then created the country’s first sweet balsamic reduction as a natural condiment to incorporate into meals — one that is less acidic, sweeter, and more palatable.

After much persuasion from friends and family members on the idea of taking the idea one step further, Jomeis Fine Foods was then launched in the same year. The name “Jomei” literally means “he who spreads light”, an ethos that the brand champions proudly to this day. Alongside the bestselling Sweet Balsamic Reduction, Jomeis Fine Foods also has a range of latte blends that are healthy, 100% vegan, paleo, and sugar/dairy/gluten-free. If that’s not a winner in your books, know that its latte blends come in a variety of unique flavours, from the now-trending turmeric to summer-fresh mint cacao.

Below, we spoke to Vicki on what makes their products stand out in the market, and what flavours you can ShopandBox as a first-timer:

Jomeis Fine Foods introduced the first Australian-made sweet balsamic reduction in 2002 — what made the foray to nutritional plant-based latte blends? How did you first discover a market for it?

Vicki had hip surgery around four years ago and was having turmeric as a natural anti-inflammatory. One day, we concocted a hot version with a heap of different super foods, and that was the how the lattes started. The hot beverage was so delicious that Vicki gave it to family and friends — who in turn agreed that it was a winner. She spent two and a half years developing the seven flavours with Melbourne baristas, food technicians and around 100 members of the public just to create a range that was smooth and delicious while still maintaining integrity.

Please share with us what “nutritional alkalising lattes” mean, and what Shoppers can expect from your lattes.

All ingredients in our lattes are alkalising, which means that it helps the body work optimally and efficiently, in comparison to coffee (which is acidic).  Research has shown that it is difficult for diseases to thrive and manifest in an alkaline body. There is no sugar, coffee, dairy, gluten in our lattes and it is also 100% natural and non GMO.

What are some of the common misconceptions that consumers have regarding latte blends?

People always assume that lattes have coffee in them. The word “latte” just means milk, actually.

What were some of the challenges behind the recipe process of creating a paleo, vegan, dairy-free, GF, 100% natural latte blend?

At the beginning we were contemplating if we should have added a natural sweetener. We got feedback from Melbourne baristas, food technicians and also from the public, and the majority of them agreed that our lattes had to taste good and palatable enough for people to want to try other varieties. So we decided to use Green Leaf Stevia, which is a pure, ground, herbal plant that is alkaline forming and the least processed type of stevia available. It is also great for bone density, and does not affect blood sugar levels.

What are some of your favourite recipes/drinks incorporating your products?

To date we have shot about 50 recipe videos that you can find on YouTube, everything from smoothies, blissballs to salads — all incorporating the latte blends. Our favourites have got to be the Turmeric BlissBalls, Turmeric Spiced Cauliflower, Pecan Spiced Kale Salad, and also the Matcha Love Bites.

What is your most popular latte flavour?

Turmeric, thanks to the wonderful exposure on social media and news articles regarding its potency and health benefits. Beetroot and matcha come close after turmeric. We also noticed that Minty Cacao is a popular one during summer, and Spicy Ginger in the winter. The Cacao blend is actually a great hot chocolate alternative — both healthy and delicious, especially so with a dash of pink salt. Those are great for kids too. But if you’re not a fan of pure/original Matcha, try the Matcha & Cacao for a fun twist.

Apart from balsamic reductions and latte blends, what are types of food/drinks are you interested in launching next?

There are tonnes of ideas in the pipeline, and we can’t disclose any just yet. But all of our new launches will definitely be vegan, free of gluten and dairy, paleo, raw, non-GMO, 100% natural and made mindfully with integrity. Our brand ethos is to spread the light, which is about creating healthy delicious, mindful alternative products that love you back and to help people consume consciously. Our four pillars are healthy body, healthy mind, healthy relationships and a healthy home.
