Guide to the 10-Step Korean Skincare Routine

Ever wonder how Korean women achieve their glowing clear complexion? If there’s one enviable aspect of their culture (apart from the amazing food and fashion labels!), it would likely be the effortless way that their female counterparts maintain their skin.

But little did you know that it actually takes more than 10 steps to look as good as they do, from amassing a variety of skincare products be it essences, serums, creams, sheet masks and everything else, to maintaining a particular routine religiously every day. We did a little research and found that the Korean 10-step skincare routine is indeed what these Korean women abide by:

Step 1: Oil Cleanse

Slather two pumps of Innisfree Apple Juicy Cleansing Oil, KRW 20,000,  all over your face and gently massage it into your skin in circular motions. You can add a little water so that it’s easier to remove it later on. Oil cleansing helps effectively remove traces of makeup and any sebum or dirt after a day out.

Step 2: Cleanse

The second half of the double cleanse routine is to remove water-based dirt using a foam or cream cleanser such as Laneige Deep Pore Cleansing Foam, KRW 22,500, with the same gentle circular motions as you will with the oil cleanser.

Step 3: Exfoliate

Apply Skinfood’s Black Sugar Wash Off Mask, KRW 7,700,  to exfoliate your face only twice a month as less is more with removing dead skin cells that are not only on the surface of your skin. Focus more on problem areas such as oily T-zone, larger pores and blackheads.

Step 4: Toner

Also called a “refresher”, Koreans believe that applying toner such as The SAEM See & Saw A.C Control Toner, KRW 10,000, helps relieve your skin after the cleansing while restoring the pH balance. Unlike the American alcohol-filled toners, Korean toners are known to hydrate and clarify your skin instead.

Step 5: Essence

Known as the most important step of the 1o-step routine, essences (Su:m37 Secret Programming Essence, KRW 66,500, ) are liquid concentrate that help increase cellular renewal to effectively brighten in a quick amount of time.

Step 6: Serum

Also referred to as “ampoules” in Korea, serums like Lee JiHam Doctor’s Care Vita Propolis Ampoule, KRW 28,400,  are basically concentrated versions of essences and help target specific skin problems such as sunspots and fine lines, and is also meant to be layered upon the essence.

Step 7: Sheet Mask

Sheet masks are also a twice-a-week ritual like face scrubs, and serve to make your skin absorb a ton nutrients (whether vitamins, antioxidants, collagen) at one go. Sheet masks (Dermal Premium Hyaluronic Acid Collagen Essence Mask, KRW 1,500) are exceptionally useful if your skin is constantly dry and dull.

Step 8: Eye Cream

Also practiced in most Western and Eastern skincare routines, eye creams help banish fine lines, dark circles and reduce puffiness. Gently tap Etude House Moistfull Super Collagen Eye Concentrate, KRW 12,800 around your eye area for maximum results.

Step 9: Moisturizer

Replenish your skin with a moisturizer after all the cleansing, and don’t forget to lightly massage the product into your neck area as well. Try Nature Republic’s Real Squeeze Aloe Vera Emulsion, KRW 11,900,

Step 10: Night Cream

And if your skin is already feeling like it’s wearing a thick layer of impenetrable products, the last thing you need to apply is a night cream to help lock all the nutrients into your skin overnight such as Innisfree Green Tea Balance Cream, KRW 25,000,
