Price Comparison: Royal Copenhagen

When we talk about having the best china served on the table for any special occasion, the first brand that comes to mind is Royal Copenhagen porcelain. But here’s a look back at why this Danish brand is a must-have in every household (in our opinion!)

Founded in 1775 by Queen Juliane Marie of Denmark, Royal Copenhagen’s heritage-filled legacy is signified by its unique factory mark, consisting of 3 hand-painted waves that symbolise Denmark’s waterways, the ‘Oresund’ or Sound, the Great Belt and the Little Belt. Its craftsmanship knows no boundaries – approximately 30 pairs of hands might’ve been used in the making of a single porcelain product, and its signature cobalt blue pigment can actually withstand high temperatures so you don’t have to worry about its colour tarnishing in the dishwasher.

Even Royal Copenhagen’s blue hand-painted pattern has a story of its own. Inspired dominantly by China’s porcelain, the signature blue fluted plain design incorporates stylised flowers such as chrysanthemums, Denmark’s cinquefoil, and occasionally the nutflower. All porcelain in Royal Copenhagen are hand-painted to every detail and between 1,500 to 2,000 different kinds of porcelain have been produced over the centuries. It’s probably more difficult to find a Danish house that doesn’t have a piece of Royal Copenhagen porcelain, seeing how popular this brand has been through the ages.

The Practical Side of Royal Copenhagen

  1. Dishwasher safe – even the ones with hand-painted pigment
  2. Microwave safe – except those with metal decoration
  3. Freezer safe – we’ve personally used this to freeze home-churned ice cream
  4. Oven safe – regular and fan-assisted oven
  5. Thermal series – we especially love how these double-barrel cups mean that you can pour boiling or freezing water into them and you won’t feel a thing!
