Finnish design house Marimekko is one brand that we’d love to rep for pretty much everything in our home. From tableware to bed linens, its unique motifs in a myriad of colours would spruce up any abode.
But Marimekko has a heritage that is worth more than its bold signature floral prints and home and living wares. The brand was founded in 1951 by two Finnish entrepreneurs Viljo and Armi Rati, and its status in the industry was cemented all thanks to the work of two designers: Vuokko Nurmesniemi who joined in the 1950s, and Maija Isola who came on board a decade later.

Marimekko’s iconic print, the Unikko, is the ‘rebel poppy design’ designed by Isola that is most commonly associated with the brand. But the brand expanded its reach to the USA when Jackie Kennedy wore eight Marimekko dresses during the 1960 USA presidential campaign. The 1990s saw a new period of growth for the brand under Kirsti Paakkanen, who made the Unikko print popular once again in the 2000s alongside introducing a handful of newer classics.

Collaborations wise, the brand has partnered with Converse and Banana Republic on creating capsule collections 2011 and 2014 respectively. The latest collab was last year’s partnership with Target, resulting in a 200-piece collection made of summery dresses and swimwear options, kids clothes, and home accessories as well.
